A giant panda gave birth to her fourth cub in a south-west China breeding center on Saturday August 25. The panda, named Yuan Yuan, gave birth to the tiny, wriggling cub then picked it up in her mouth, placed it on her belly and licked it clean. Considered a national treasure, the giant panda is seen as having come back from the brink of extinction, but remains under threat from logging, agriculture and China’s rapid urbanization. There are an estimated 1600 living wild in China, mostly in Sichuan. Around 300 are found in captivity around the world, most of them in China.
